Step On It has been released, a fan rebuild of 1999's LEGO Racers on a completely new engine. It's an unofficial project that runs straight in the browser, mobile devices included, and it isn't connected to the LEGO Group.
The original 1999 game was developed by High Voltage Software and published by LEGO Media. The remake's authors are recreating the engine from scratch; the work is still ongoing and rests largely on decompilation carried out by the isledecomp community.
The remake restores the cut routes from the original and adds new tracks. Other improvements over the original game have also been promised.
Launch works as a web app. On iOS, players are advised to add the game to the home screen in Safari and enable the open-as-web-app mode; fixing the controller's Back button requires iOS 26.1 or newer.
In the sound settings you can choose the JUGEBOX98 soundtrack, which consists of remasters of the original game's music. The interface uses the RacersFont typeface, and on the browser side it relies on the reference work of warp.parts.
The project uses the SDL, Emscripten and FFmpeg tools and libraries, along with research by The Cutting Room Floor and Rock Raiders United communities. The credits single out Studframe Animations' contribution to reconstructing cut material and the work of Zanthera.
Rights to the original game, its assets and trademarks remain with their owners. The remake is a fan project, there's no official release from LEGO, and the authors stress that including third-party material in the project doesn't imply affiliation or endorsement.
