Precision Neuroscience raises $250 million for its Layer 7 implant

New York-based Precision Neuroscience has closed a $250 million Series D round. The company announced the deal on 24 September 2026; the round was oversubscribed, and its co-leads were Bill Ackman's investment firm Pershing Square, the Ackman Oxman Institute and an unnamed large life sciences fund. Since 2021, Precision has raised $430 million.
This is the largest publicly announced single round for an American invasive neurointerface operator outside Neuralink. The money will go toward expanding the clinical program, moving the Layer 7 implant through the next stages of FDA review, and building the infrastructure for commercialization. The company did not disclose its post-round valuation.
The Layer 7 implant
Layer 7 is a thin film with 4,096 electrodes that lies on the surface of the cerebral cortex and does not penetrate the tissue. The device is minimally invasive and can be removed if necessary. In terms of the number of electrodes on the cortical surface, this is the highest publicly disclosed figure among invasive neurointerface operators.
Since April 2025, Layer 7 has held FDA 510(k) clearance for commercial use in recording, monitoring and stimulation on the cortical surface, with an implantation period of up to 30 days. The implant has already been used in more than 100 surgeries at 18 medical institutions, including Mount Sinai and the University of Pennsylvania.
Precision was founded in 2021 in New York by Ben Rapoport, Michael Mager, Demetrios Papageorgiou and Mark Hettick; Mager became CEO. Rapoport was part of Neuralink's founding team, left it in 2018 and practices as a neurosurgeon at Mount Sinai, which is named as a partner of the Ackman Oxman Institute.
An atypical co-lead
The Ackman Oxman Institute was announced in August 2026 as a non-profit organization with an initial gift of about $400 million in Pershing Square shares. A non-profit institute acting as a co-lead of a $250 million private round is atypical for the venture market: it is a signal that money driven not only by financial returns is flowing into invasive neurointerfaces.
Not disclosed: the post-round valuation, the name of the third co-lead, the timing of commercial launch, and the next stage of Layer 7's FDA clearance beyond the current 30-day authorization.
