On October 18, 1985, Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, in North America. It was a redesigned version of the Japanese Famicom console, released under a new name. The NES was sold with the game Super Mario Bros., which became the system’s best-selling game.
The launch came as the U.S. video game market was dealing with the aftermath of the 1983 crash. According to the source, early NES sales were slow: the crash, caused in part by the large number of unreliable consoles, had undermined buyers’ confidence. Nintendo later briefly bundled the system with the R.O.B. robot to show that its consoles could be trusted.
By the time the NES was discontinued in August 1995, nearly 62 million consoles had been sold. The source ranks it among the best-selling gaming systems of all time.
