On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 carrying members of Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi. It was flying from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
There were 26 people on board. Six died: band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines; assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick; captain Walter McCreary; and first officer William John Gray. Twenty people survived.
The plane ran out of fuel. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board identified fuel exhaustion and the loss of power in both engines, due to the crew’s failure to monitor the fuel supply, as the probable cause of the crash. Inadequate flight planning and an undetermined malfunction in the right engine contributed to the accident.
The crash halted Lynyrd Skynyrd’s career. Ten years later, Ronnie’s brother Johnny reformed the band.
