Qualcomm opens early access to Linux for Snapdragon X2 laptops

Qualcomm открыла ранний доступ к Linux для ноутбуков на Snapdragon X2

Qualcomm has shown a preliminary Linux build for laptops with Snapdragon X2 processors. It is called Early Developer Preview, and the announcement is dated September 23, 2026. The stated goal is simple: to make Linux work better on these devices.

The name makes clear who the build is for. It is a tool for developers, not a finished solution for a buyer: you cannot yet download it, boot it, and use it like a normal system.

The basics already work in the current version. The system boots, using systemd-boot for that; USB and PCIe connect; internal components communicate with the board normally. Graphics and display output rely on open drivers such as Freedreno, so you can get a desktop, a hardware-accelerated browser and basic GPU compute.

Separately, access to the Hexagon NPU is open, and developers can run AI workloads directly on the device under Linux. More importantly, Qualcomm promises to submit the changes to the mainline kernel, meaning support will not be tied to a single distribution or a proprietary software stack.

If all goes to plan, the changes will appear in the kernel in November 2026, and any distribution with a sufficiently recent kernel version will then get support. For now, the build can be viewed in Qualcomm's repository on GitHub.
