Google adds native Markdown support to Docs and Drive

On October 5, 2026, Google began gradually rolling out native Markdown support in Google Docs and Drive. Files with .md and .markdown extensions can now be viewed, edited, and commented on directly in Docs without changing their file type, and their rendered view can be opened in Drive. The update is available to all Google Workspace customers and to personal Google account holders.
Markdown is a standard text format widely used by large language models. It preserves structured content, including tables, headings, and bulleted lists, without requiring heavy, bulky file formats.
What it was like before
Previously, such files had to be imported and converted to the Google Docs format. The conversion often changed the markup, removed comments, and split the file into parts.
Now a file can be opened, edited, and discussed without conversion or a change of format. Users do not have to write Markdown by hand or give up Docs' collaboration and commenting tools.
Rendered view in Drive
Drive now has rendered Markdown. Documents appear fully formatted, with clickable links and structured tables.
Google notes that this way of working lets both people and agents collaborate. No one has to write raw syntax, convert files manually, or sacrifice Docs features.
There are no separate settings for the feature: neither administrative controls nor a user toggle. The rollout is gradual, taking up to 15 days from October 5, 2026, in Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.
