Keurig coffee maker flooded a home network with a terabyte of data in ten days

Кофемашина Keurig залила домашнюю сеть терабайтом данных за десять дней

An IT specialist using the nickname Nomad (@NomadsGalaxy) was trying to figure out on October 6, 2026 why the home Wi-Fi network at his parents' place had started slowing down. The culprit turned out to be neither a computer nor a TV, but a Keurig K-Supreme SMART coffee maker. According to the Ubiquiti UniFi dashboard, the machine sent more than 1 TB of data and downloaded nearly 10 GB in ten days. He wrote about the finding on X.

That volume is strange for a device whose main job is to heat water and puncture capsules: on average it works out to about 9 Mbit/s across ten days.

No traces of covert data collection, surveillance cameras or botnet activity were found. According to the owner, almost all of the traffic stayed inside the home network and did not go out to the open internet.

Feedback loop inside the network

It appears the coffee maker got into an internal feedback loop because of a failure and endlessly flooded the local access point with junk requests.

Connected Keurig coffee makers use the BrewID system to recognize the type of capsule, automatically select the temperature and brew speed, and sync brewing history and bonuses with the cloud. When such ordinary telemetry requests run into firmware failures or a failed local handshake, an unhandled error loop can make the device repeat its attempts endlessly and bury the local network in packets.

Smart appliances and the home network

Modern homes have quite a few smart refrigerators, washing machines and automatic toasters, which often run on lightweight proprietary systems with minimal supervision of the network. Any failure can clog the local bandwidth, disrupt the home network, or create unnecessary and at times insecure vulnerabilities.
