Google Play Now Lets You Run Personal Apps on Android Without Publishing Them

Google Play позволила запускать личные приложения на Android без публикации

On October 13, 2026, Google introduced a new Google Play capability: apps you build with AI can be launched on your own Android device without publishing them to the store's public catalog. The company announced this at a briefing ahead of the launch, TechCrunch reports.

Such apps are launched through Google Play under a regular Google account, but they remain completely private: they are not shown in store search or listings and are not shared with anyone other than the creator.

They are built in Google AI Studio. The requirements of current Google Play policies for personal apps still apply.

The new feature stems from the fact that more and more people are trying to build apps for their own tasks with AI. Previously, to use such an app on your own device, you had to publish it to Google Play — that is, expose it to roughly 3 billion store users. Because of that, many limited themselves to web apps, which work on any device, instead of a native Android build.

At launch, the feature is available to users in the US aged 18 and over. In the coming months, Google promises to make it possible to share such apps with a trusted circle of friends and family, for example an app for a children's sports team, without going to the public catalog. If a personal app becomes popular, it can be moved to Google Play for everyone after trust and safety reviews.

In the same announcement, Google described other store updates: a personal game recommender called Game Finder, which will first appear in the US in English and will draw on the user's preferences and knowledge gained from a gaming community of 1.2 billion players; a Community Posts section for questions about games; 48-hour game challenges called Sprints; and an update to the built-in AI assistant Ask Play, which will be able to compare similar apps. Google Play apps and games will be more closely tied to Gemini conversations, and parents will be able to share their child's age range with developers without specifying the exact date of birth.

Google's vice president for Google Play and the developer ecosystem, Sam Bright, described the future of apps in the store at the briefing as 'personal, safe, and built by everyone.'
