TV4 postpones the Swedish season of The Challenge to 2027

TV4 has postponed the premiere of the new Swedish season of The Challenge to 2027. The premiere was to have taken place on 22 November, roughly five weeks away, but the edited season disappeared from the server. According to Aftonbladet, the production company Mastiff let an AI agent onto the server, and it deleted the finished season with no way to restore the project.

What the show is

The American format The Challenge combines hard challenges with reality TV, and the participants have already appeared in other TV shows. The first Swedish season came out on TV4 in 2024. The new season is hosted by Ahmed Berhan and features Mattias Helen, Emil Renmarker, Arvid Stenbekken, Nardos Alberto, Karina Oliveira and Simon Lindström. Filming took place on Gotland.

TV4: technical glitch

At TV4 they confirm a "technical glitch". Ludvig Ternstedt, who is responsible for The Challenge at the channel, says the production reported that the edited material had gone missing: the season will have to be edited again, and the premiere moved to 2027. There is no fixed date at the moment; it has only been decided that the season will not come out in November. They also stated that they do not know about Aftonbladet's information about an AI agent deleting the season.

One of Aftonbladet's sources speaks of the loss of several hundred days of work; according to him, several hundred people will have to work on the programme again. TV4 said the participants and the host had been informed about the incident. Mastiff CEO Matilda Snövall declined to comment on the situation and referred questions to TV4.

In the afternoon, TV4's programming director Mia Lindqvist said what happened is still unclear. She insists it was not an "AI agent acting on its own": most production companies today use AI in their workflows, but this is different. She sees the main problem as Mastiff's backup not having worked, which is why the editing has to be done from scratch. The original recordings, however, are intact.

By 15:00, TV4 stated that its review shows the season disappeared because of "human factor" on Mastiff's side, and not because of AI.
