Working group discusses easing imports of Samsung and SK Hynix equipment

In August and September, the AI Infrastructure and Data Centers working group under the government’s AI subcommittee discussed easing imports of computing equipment. One of the issues under consideration was the possible return of Samsung and SK Hynix products to the parallel-import list; the brands have been excluded from it since May.
According to Forbes, the group’s members also discussed amendments to an Industry and Trade Ministry order that removed around two dozen global computer brands from the list. No decision has yet been made on returning Samsung and SK Hynix: it is a measure under consideration, not a change to the rules currently in force.
The order’s restrictions apply, among other things, to server equipment and data storage systems. Individual DRAM, NAND and HBM memory chips are classified under different codes and do not themselves fall under these product categories, Forbes quotes lawyer Vladimir Chikin as saying. Therefore, the discussion does not mean that imports of all components from these manufacturers are being proposed for approval.
