Microsoft is investigating a Word 2608 failure: the app may close when generating documents from templates

Microsoft has confirmed a failure in Word: after updating to version 2608 (build 20326.x), the app may close unexpectedly. The trigger is described narrowly — a third-party program from the document or case management class generates a document from a template and populates it with data.
The problem has been added to the official list of known Word issues for Microsoft 365; the entry was updated on September 14, 2026. The status is "investigating": the Word team is looking into it, and the company has not yet offered a temporary workaround. The page belongs to the section of materials about fixes and workarounds for recent Word issues on Windows.
The scenario is tied specifically to automatic generation: the failure occurs at the moment when a template is populated with data from an external system. Text typed by hand is not covered by the problem description — office users doing ordinary work in the editor will most likely notice nothing.
The main risk is for organizations where Word is embedded in a document workflow pipeline: letters, contracts and other paperwork are generated from templates in batches, and a crash of the editor at that step breaks the entire chain — from preparing the package to sending it.
There is no workaround from Microsoft yet, so the automatic document generation stage remains a weak spot for such teams. Status changes can be tracked via the entry in the list of known issues on the Microsoft support site.
