On October 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that AI image upscaling has made its way to the base PlayStation 5. The new technology is called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR for short. Previously, the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution AI upscaler, or PSSR, worked only on the PS5 Pro.
PSSR analyzes the game image pixel by pixel and uses AI to raise its detail and stability compared with conventional upscaling methods. Since PSSR launched on the PS5 Pro, players and developers have asked whether a similar improvement in image quality could be brought to the standard PS5. The answer stayed no: the technology's computational requirements made it impossible.
QSSR is described as a new, more performant tier of AI upscaling. It arrived as part of Project Amethyst, a joint Sony and AMD effort on AI graphics, and it rests on two things: a simplified neural-network architecture and manual optimization for the PS5 in pursuit of maximum performance. The company notes that PSSR remains the reference on the PS5 Pro, while QSSR delivers a noticeable improvement in image detail and stability on the standard console.
Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei will be the first to get support. Both games received a patch on the day of the announcement adding QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Insomniac Games says the new technology improves pixel-level sharpness and environmental stability, while Sucker Punch Productions notes that QSSR handles fine details of characters and the world well and provides a temporal stability the PS5 previously lacked.
According to Sony, QSSR will be available to all PlayStation developers, and the company expects to see it supported in other games.
